Completed in 2021, SMFA oversaw the impressive $11 Million redevelopment of Charles Campbell College, a government funded project under the Capital Works Programme.
Stage 2 of the project focused on refurbishing an existing learning building, which consisted of traditional segregated classrooms, into a modern STEAM facility. The goal was to create a collaborative and flexible learning environment that seamlessly integrates various disciplines including art, food technology, dance and drama.
A new central two-level entrance connects students to different clusters of learning spaces, replacing the previous institutional corridors. The new entrance not only facilitates movement and enables a more accessible, inclusive building, but also serves as a vibrant social learning space.
A complete seismic upgrade was undertaken as part of the three-storey building upgrade. Four dual-purpose ‘shafts’ were included to provide seismic bracing which were adaptively repurposed functionally to the design. A steel-framed shaft acts as an entry canopy with an elevated outdoor learning area, while three concrete shafts provided additional storage spaces.
