About

SMFA, alongside the Department for Infrastructure and Christies Beach High School, were engaged to commence on the next phase of the masterplan at the Christies Downs campus: refurbishing the School's main building.

The renovation focused on creating contemporary, open, and flexible spaces that supported modern teaching and learning methods. The highlight of the transformation was the newly designed open-plan resource centre, strategically positioned at the heart of the school to welcome and invite students to collaborate and learn.

The permeability of the space aims to foster a sense of connection with the adjacent teaching areas and create a central gathering space. The flexible teaching spaces and breakout zones featured expansive glass partitions to create a flow between group work and individual study.

Included in the scope of works was the refurbishment of three existing buildings— the art, science, and resource centre, as well as the general teaching, reception, and administration areas. The main building also received a major façade upgrade, increasing street presence of the School using a perforated mesh in a geometric pattern. This, along with new external landscaping, helped to emphasise wayfinding and integrate the facade into the existing fabric cohesively.

The collaborative efforts of SMFA and Christies Beach High School have created dynamic, contemporary learning spaces that are flexible and allow students to explore and share.
