About

SMFA collaborated with CESA to design and document a new standalone middle school for St Mary MacKillop in Wallaroo.

The purpose of this project was to create a dedicated space for the middle school students, accommodating up to 90 students across three General Learning Areas (GLAs).

The design of the middle school includes a shared makerspace and food technology kitchen, which not only serves as functional spaces for hands-on learning but also allows for full school gatherings. The flexibility of the design is evident in the incorporation of withdrawal spaces, providing opportunities for small group work, music tuition, and meetings.

In addition to the indoor facilities, the external play area was carefully planned. It features a 3v3 basketball court integrated into a grassed play space, surrounded by tiered limestone blocks that create an amphitheater-like setting for outdoor gatherings and events.

The new middle school at St Mary MacKillop in Wallaroo not only provides a conducive learning environment for students but also offers engaging outdoor spaces that encourage social interaction and community involvement. The design prioritises both functionality and aesthetics, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience for the students.
