Set for completion this year, the St Peters Street Residence is a two-storey extension to a character home in the historic St Peters.
Designed to be the client’s “forever home”, the St Peters Street addition seamlessly integrates with the existing heritage dwelling while providing modern functionality and amenity.
A key focus of the design was to respect and respond to the character of the original home. Situated within the Residential Historic (Conservation) Zone and listed a Contributory Item, the development of the original bluestone villa was restricted to existing roof lines. Excavation was utilised to achieve the double-storey addition that includes five bedrooms, double garage, open plan living with butlers pantry, and pool. The form, proportions, and materials were considered to ensure that the new addition harmonises with the original building.
Environmentally sustainable design principles have been incorporated through recycled bricks, energy-efficient lighting, insulation, and rainwater harvesting systems. Cast iron fence panels from Broken Hill and salvaged bluestone from a neighbouring demolished dwelling were repurposed into the project, also contributing to the sustainability merit of the works.
The extension achieves a sympathetic, contemporary outcome conducive to modern living for the family that has called the Villa home for multiple generations past.
